Course description:
Forensic Odontology: This lecture can also cover domestic violence. It provides a basic understanding of the unique contribution which dentistry makes in the medico-legal arena. History and background of forensic dentistry, physical anthropology, facial reconstruction, dental identification, mass fatality operations and identifications, bite mark evidence and dental malpractice are discussed.
Domestic Violence: Discusses origins of domestic (child, spouse, elder) abuse, and recognizing their similarities. Types of injuries seen, with particular emphasis on orofacial injuries, and differential diagnosis; and actions legally required in support of the victim are reviewed.
Professional background:
Dr. Kenney served as chief forensic odontologist for the Cook County (Chicago metro) Medical Examiner’s Office for 13 years, and has qualified as an expert witness in court over 95 times. His master’s research in 1979 was on orofacial injuries in child abuse. He has been a key member of identification teams in commercial air accidents and consults for the NTSB, Department of Homeland Security and the Army’s Central ID Lab in Hawaii. He is a past president of the American Board of Forensic Odontology, and lectures in the US and internationally.
